The Cotswolds

Painswick

Painswick is without a doubt one of the prettier Cotswold villages. Although a village, it is almost the size of a small town. This is due to the fact that in the past it was heavily involved in the wool trade. This trade generated the wealth to build the magnificent houses and one of the Cotswolds more distinctive churches - St. Mary's. The church is mentioned in the Doomsday book and there is record of a priest being in Painswick in 1086. During the Civil War in the mid 1600's there was damage to the church caused by cannonballs. At least fifty people were killed during this confrontation. A visit to Painswick is a must as there are plenty of places to stay and plenty of sights to see, such as the Rococo Gardens and the nearby Prinknash Abbey Park. Painswick would make an ideal place to stay for a wonderful Cotswold holiday.
