Sheepscombe and Jacks Green |
|
In the early 1800's there were a few hundred people living in poverty in this village. A lot of them worked in the local mill when they weren't drinking at one of several local inns. It was a fairly lawless place with no school or church. When the church came to the village the situation improved very slowly as it was a hard task to change the ways of the locals. The church building was started in April 1819 by the mill owner using local labour from Sheepscombe. Money was raised for the church outside of the village and it is said that William Wilberforce made donations to the fund. Sheepscoombe is situated not far from Stroud just off of the B4070. Jack's Green, a small community on the edge of Sheepscombe, is also worth a visit, both villages are a good place to stay if you enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside. |
