The Cotswolds

The Rollright Stones

The Rollright Stones

The legend of the stones tells us that the King and his army were marching through the Cotswolds when they came upon an old witch. She addressed the King saying "Seven long strides thou shalt take, and if Long Compton thou canst see then the King of England thou shalt be". The King took the seven strides and on the seventh the ground rose up forming a long mound which blocked his view of the village. The Witch then turned them all into stone, with the King overlooking Long Compton and nearby, his men standing in a circle and his five Knights whispering treachery further off.
