The Cotswolds

Stow-on-the-Wold

Stow is the highest town in the Cotswolds and was built mainly in the 17th and 18th century. The Battle of Stow - the last battle in the English Civil War, took place in March 1646. The Medieval market cross is a fine example of 17th century stonework and St. Edward's Church is an impressive piece of Cotswold stone architecture. Royalist soldiers were kept prisoner in the church (where you can now view paintings by the famous Danish artist - De Craeyer), during the Civil War.

Today, Stow is a bustling market town offering many great shops - ideal for searching for that special gift or even a fabulous old antique. Several stores offer fresh and organic produce. Scattered throughout the town, you will also find many excellent restaurants and pubs/bars to ensure that your day is a real treat!
