The Cotswolds

Stroud

Stroud was at one time the centre of the wool trade for the middle of the Cotswolds, the River Frome powering it's mills. It was said that the water at Stroud had properties that improved the colour fastness of red dyes and this made the area very prosperous. The cloth for the scarlet uniform of the British army was woven here. When the wool trade failed at a later date, the soldiers used to quell the poverty riots in Stroud were wearing the red cloth uniforms that came from the same town. There is a tremendous amount of history linked to this town and it is well placed for touring the south of the Cotswolds.
