Woodchester

Woodchester is a pretty village situated near Nailsworth. The largest mosaic ever discovered in England is to be found here. The Roman mosaic, measures 45sq feet and features Orpheus and wild animals. Unfortunately, you would be very lucky indeed to view the mosaic, as it is kept covered and only able to be seen at very irregular intervals, the last being in 1973 when more than 140,000 people visited the site during the seven weeks the mosaic was on view. However, it would still be worth staying or paying Woodchester a visit, as there are good walks around the locality and many fine old buildings to be seen.
